On the beach, as in most resort areas, rates vary according to the season and the lodging's proximity to water. If, for economy's sake, you are considering a location away from the water, you may want to ask about access either to the ocean or to the sound and inquire as to whether or not it is within walking distance. The Crystal Coast is becoming a year-round resort town. We recommend you make reservations in advance no matter what time of year you plan on visiting. During the early spring and late-fall shoulder seasons and in the winter many establishments offer attractive weekend getaways, golf packages and special rates. The area is a popular site for meetings, conventions and fishing excursions throughout the year, and many facilities offer meeting rooms and convention services. The Crystal Coast Civic Center (see our Attractions chapter) in Morehead City accommodates sizable shows and gatherings with hotels and other lodgings conveniently nearby. Each lodging establishment has a different deposit and refund policy. While some require a deposit equal to one night's stay in advance, others will simply hold your reservation on your credit card. Often a 24-hour notice is sufficient for a full refund, but some require as much as a three-day notice. Because of the area's popularity, extending your stay can be difficult but not impossible. Some places require up to 72-hours notice for extensions past your originally scheduled departure date. In cases of emergency, we also recommend that you inquire into a hotel's hurricane or emergency policy. Sometimes, hurricane evacuations can mean an abrupt end to a vacation. Most area resorts have policies in place to make refunds available under these conditions, but be sure to ask what that policy is before you pay. Many of the area's lodgings offer nonsmoking rooms by request. The pet policy is the proprietor's option. Most do not allow pets in rooms, although some lodgings do make provisions for them. If your pet will be traveling with you it is best to ask before making reservations. This guide doesn't attempt
to list all the accommodations available on the Crystal Coast. Rather,
