The tradition of bed and breakfasts and small inns, strong in Europe and England for many years, began to catch on in this country with Americans' desire to experience romance and escapism in historic homes. Because of Wilmington's small-town charm and vibrant history, the area offers outstanding bed and breakfasts plus a number of wonderful small inns. Most feature fabulous antiques and have unique, fascinating histories, decor and gardens. Some are as casual as a pajama party, while others are steeped in Victorian elegance.
Several beach bed and breakfasts invite you to enjoy the ocean breezes, dine overlooking the sea, wade in the surf and stroll on the sand. You'll find quite a different feel at the beaches, one that is definitely easy-going and informal.
As a point of information, bed and breakfasts differ from small inns when it comes to serving food to guests. If you like a full, cooked breakfast served at a given time usually in a common dining area, a bed and breakfast is for you. On the other hand, an inn usually provides only a continental breakfast, if any at all. Some inns have kitchenette facilities so that guests may prepare their own morning meal; some have variations on the breakfast offering, but none serve a formal meal at an appointed hour. Another difference between an inn and a bed and breakfast is the location. An inn is almost always "in town" and may be associated with a pub, restaurant or have a bar on the premises. Not so with a bed and breakfast, though some offer a self-service refrigerator for wine and beer or soft drinks.
Wherever you choose to stay, your hosts surely will be knowledgeable about the area and can assist you with directions and in making reservations for shows, meals, charters and golf packages. Bed and breakfasts and inns typically do not allow pets, smoking indoors or very young children unless by prior arrangement. Most establishments accept major credit cards and personal checks, especially for making payment in advance. Many charge a fee for cancellations, so be sure to ask about the policy. Also note that often they require a full weekend lodging, especially during the Azalea Festival in April and Riverfest in October (see our Annual Events section for information on these events).
